In a world where the hustle and bustle often relegate mindfulness and self-care to the back burner, finding a form of yoga that promotes both physical strength and emotional healing can be a transformative experience. Enter Forrest Yoga—a powerful practice founded by Ana Forrest in the late 20th century that intertwines breath, movement, and mindfulness. In this blog post, we will explore what Forrest Yoga is, its key principles, and how it can help you connect with your body and spirit while unlocking your full potential.

Forrest Yoga is a dynamic and nurturing style of yoga that emphasizes the connection between body, breath, and emotion. Developed by Ana Forrest, a yoga practitioner and healer, Forrest Yoga is designed to address the needs of modern practitioners by focusing on strength-building, flexibility, and emotional release. The practice combines traditional yoga postures with innovative movements and deep breathing techniques to foster healing and transformation.

  1. Breath: Central to Forrest Yoga is pranayama (the practice of breath control). Ana emphasizes that breath is the foundation of every movement and essential for accessing deeper layers of the body and mind. Breathing fully can be a gateway to releasing tension and clearing emotional blockages.

  2. Core Strength: Forrest Yoga places a strong emphasis on developing core strength. A strong core not only helps with stability and balance but also serves as a foundation for overall body alignment and movement. Core-strengthening postures encourage practitioners to engage their abdominal muscles, thereby enhancing their physical practice.

  3. Intention: Each session begins with setting an intention, whether it’s healing from past trauma, cultivating self-love, or finding clarity in one’s life. This element of intention helps to create a more focused and meaningful practice, allowing participants to connect on a deeper level with themselves.

  4. Grounding Movements: Forrest Yoga incorporates grounding postures that help practitioners connect with the earth and build a sense of stability. These movements empower individuals to feel more anchored both physically and emotionally, fostering a sense of resilience.

  5. Emotional Awareness: One of the most unique aspects of Forrest Yoga is its approach to emotional healing. Practitioners are encouraged to explore their emotions through movement and breath. By connecting with suppressed feelings, individuals can begin to release what no longer serves them and find a sense of freedom.

  6. Self-Discovery and Empowerment: Forrest Yoga promotes self-exploration and self-empowerment, allowing practitioners to tap into their inner strength. The practice encourages individuals to embrace their true selves and cultivate a compassionate relationship with their bodies.

The benefits of Forrest Yoga extend far beyond the physical realm, offering a holistic approach to healing and wellness. Some of the many advantages include:

  • Improved Physical Health: The combination of strength-building and flexibility-promoting postures can lead to enhanced physical fitness, better posture, and reduced tension in the body.

  • Emotional Release and Healing: By addressing emotional blockages and trauma, practitioners may experience a profound sense of relief and emotional well-being.

  • Enhanced Mind-Body Connection: Forrest Yoga fosters mindfulness and presence, allowing individuals to cultivate a deeper connection with their bodies and inner selves.

  • Building Community: Many practitioners find a sense of belonging and support in Forrest Yoga classes, creating a community of like-minded individuals who share their journey of healing and growth.

“By speaking the truth, we learn the difference between our authentic self and our facade. If we put our little masked self out there, the horror is that other people might accept and end up making love to it, while we starve and die of neglect behind it. It’s much richer to interact genuinely with the world. When you speak the truth, it feeds and brightens your Spirit. When you don’t, it dims your Spirit. Don’t you want to live in a way that brightens your Spirit? To take a deep breath and feel what’s rocketing and roiling around in your core? What a delight!”

Forrest Yoga offers a unique blend of physical, emotional, and spiritual practices designed to heal and empower individuals. Whether you are looking to improve your physical health, release emotional tension, or simply find a moment of stillness in your busy life, Forrest Yoga provides a nurturing environment for self-discovery and transformation. If you are ready to explore this powerful practice, consider attending a class or workshop to immerse yourself in the world of Forrest Yoga. Your journey to connection and healing awaits!

The picture above is with Ana Forrest. Grateful for the opportunity to practice and learn from her! It was back in 2010/2011 that I picked up Fierce Medicine at Back Bay Yoga in Boston and immediately started to explore her style of yoga. Then the opportunity arose to practice in Hawaii with her directly, not just a Forrest Yoga teacher. Truly grateful for the experience to learn from her.
